The 10th ESPI Autumn conference will be the occasion to present views, positions and programmes around the topic of “Space for Sustainable Development”. The various stakeholders will have the opportunity to establish an interdisciplinary network with policy advisors, space agencies, the wider development community, academia, industrial and new private actors, European and international institutions. There will also be the opportunity to discuss, around practical demonstrations, the use of Space for sustainable development, with the involvement of field actors, and to share needs and solutions in an interactive format.
The participants to the conference will include leaders from both the development community and the Space community. Representatives from prestigious institutions, international organisations, and academia will set the scene and provide inputs to the discussions, which will involve citizens, Non-Governmental Organizations, the new space actors as well as journalists and media. The European Space Policy Institute represents the ideal location for gathering the UN COPUOS distinguished representatives, the European Institutional actors and the international participants, offering a unique venue to discover the magnificent city of Vienna.

The overarching theme of the 10th ESPI Autumn Conference is “Space for Sustainable Development”. Through this theme, ESPI would like to shed light on the growing relevance of space technologies, actors and institutions in enabling sustainable development. A special emphasis will be put on the roles and approaches of the diverse groups of actors and stakeholders involved in current development efforts. The programme includes distinguished representatives from international organizations, academia and industry, offering a comprehensive view at global level.
On the first day of the conference, the challenges in development and the role of space will be discussed, reviewing the different development assistance models and their relation to space, and concluding with reflections on the European approach to sustainable development.
At the beginning of the second day, the relationship between space and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will be presented, shedding light on the views of developing countries, NGOs, Space Agencies and the United Nations. In the afternoon, the financial and non-financial aspects of sustainable development will be analysed by looking at some emerging approaches, including both the views of international financial institutions and private actors.

ESPI is grateful to our founding member FFG for inviting participants to the Autumn Conference to join the FFG Forum dinner. The annual FFG Forum is a fixed point in the calendar year for Austria’s research community, bringing together experts from the economic, scientific, administrative and political fields to discuss defining issues on research and innovation. This year’s topic “Werte Schaffen” will focus on how innovation creates value for the economy and for individuals.
Guests of the Autumn Conference will be provided transportation to HalleE of the Museumsquartier on the evening of 15th September. The dinner will be a buffet style.
