The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals worldwide is still a long way ahead, but the space sector can provide extremely valuable and unique assets for this purpose, starting now. The UNISPACE+50 process is an ideal platform for defining the new boundaries, opportunities and the challenges that this sector will face in the years to come, including the greater involvement of new space actors, non-governmental organizations and civil society.

The report initially introduces the relation between Sustainable Development and Space, underlining the importance of a structured dialogue with all the relevant stakeholders, with a particular focus on the ones directly engaged in the field. It then presents the United Nations framework for UNISPACE +50, highlighting the sustainable development goals and the corresponding role for space, the thematic priorities, the involvement of external actors, and how ESPI has contributed to this process over the last couple of years.

Finally the report zooms into the main ESPI contributions, from the organization of a dedicated conference, to the participation to relevant fora, conferences and debates, where the role of space as an enabler of sustainable development was discussed as part of the preparatory activities leading up to UNISPACE+50:
