Yearbook 2023

The ESPI Yearbook is an annual publication that provides an overview of major developments and trends in space policy, industry, programmes, economy, and overall worldwide activity over the course of the year. 

The 2023 edition is the fifth of the new Yearbook series that features revised structure and content, organised in four complementary chapters: 

  • Policy & Programmes: space policy highlights and trends, and major space programme developments. 
  • Industry & Innovation: launcher and satellite industry developments. 
  • Global Space Economy: global and European space economy indicators. 
  • Launches & Satellites: space activity statistics, mission highlights and ESPI launch log. 

Some of the key developments presented in the 2023 edition of the ESPI Yearbook are: 

  • Revived Moon race.  
  • Results of the European Space Summit. 
  • European launcher crisis and lessons learned.  
  • Approval of another European flagship programme: IRIS². 
  • Europe’s highlights in space science: launch of the JUICE mission and the Euclid space telescope. 
  • Increased ambitions to connect space, security and defence: release of the EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence.  
  • Rising Stars: India, Gulf nations and Africa step up in space. 
  • Verticalisation of Space – space in other industry sectors. 
  • Developments in in-orbit servicing.  
  • Progress in space-based solar power. 
  • The Global Space Economy in 2022 is estimated at $385 billion (SIA) and $546 billion (Space Foundation). 
  • The European Space Budget is valued at €13,853 million in 2022.  
  • The Global investment in space ventures in 2023 totalled €6 billion.  
  • 221 launches conducted in 2023 (+19% compared to 2022), 10 launch failures (which makes 4.8% of all launches, 19 spacecraft). 
  • 2889 satellites launched (+16% compared to 2022), 2840 of which were launched into LEO, 7 into MEO, 32 into GEO and 19 into other orbits.
